FILMING AND PHOTOGRAPHY You are allowed to film and take photographs in public places unless the owner of the location has prohibited it. You must not film or photograph in a disruptive manner. If you film or photograph people, it is recommended that you ask for their permission.
ADDING MUSIC To add music to a video, you need the permission of the music creator(s) – composer and performer.
For videos made for private use that are not published or shown publicly, you are free to add music. You usually do not need permission to use music if you publish a video as a private individual on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok when your content is non-commercial, as many record companies have agreements with these platforms.
In school/college projects, you can use music under the education exception of the Copyright Act, if the video is shown only in class and not published, for example, online or on social media.
You can also create the music yourself or use music available online whose creators have allowed use through a CC (Creative Commons) licence or another open licence. Read the terms of use carefully.
ADDING IMAGES TO A VIDEO OR ANIMATION In a video, you can use: a) images that you have taken yourself b) images taken or created by others
with the creator’s permission You can ask for permission directly from the creator or rightsholder.
with ICLA’s copying licence You are allowed to copy images from the internet or scan images from books and magazines and use them in school/college projects if the project is not published online. Remember to credit the creator in your work.
with a CC licence The licence symbol indicates what you are allowed to do. CC licence symbols and the creator’s name should be placed next to the image.
Works whose protection period has expired can be freely used.
USE OF MOVING IMAGES IN YOUR OWN VIDEOS You need permission from the creator(s) to use a video or part of a video in your own work. You can ask the creator or rightsholder (e.g., the producer) for permission, or the creator may have allowed use through a CC licence. Carefully read the terms of use.
PUBLISHING VIDEOS If you make a video available online, make sure you have permission to do so for all the content, such as images, music, and videos, that you have used. And, if necessary, permission to publish from the people appearing in the video.
Remember to credit all creators in the video, also for the images and the music you have used.
