Remember to critically evaluate and compare your sources and to acknowledge them.
Filming and photography of people Ask the individuals you photograph or film for permission for both the photography or filming, and for the publication of the images.
USE OF WRITTEN MATERIAL You are free to use information and ideas. You can collect information from various sources and retell it in your own words. Remember to reference your sources.
Quotation When you use another person’s text verbatim, it’s considered a quotation. Mark the quotation with quotation marks. Always indicate the source of the quotation.
Use of works written by others To use more than a short quotation from a work authored by someone else, such as copying a poem or newspaper article and using it in your own work, you need permission from the author or copyright holder and you must acknowledge its creator.
USE OF PHOTOGRAPHS In your newspaper article, you can add pictures you’ve taken or created yourself.
You can use photos taken by others if:
a) You have permission from the creator. b) Permission has been granted with a CC (Creative Commons) licence. c) The protection period for the images has expired. d) It’s a photograph of an artwork whose protection period has already expired unless the photograph itself passes the originality test.
Photographing or filming artworks In texts, such as reviews of art exhibitions and articles about current events, such as a news article about the opening of an art exhibition, you can use images of artworks.
An artwork may appear in the background of a picture or video if its inclusion is incidental.
USE OF VIDEOS You can create a link to a video that is legally available online.
To use a video or a part of one in a newspaper article, permission is required. You can obtain permission from the author or copyright holder (e.g., the producer). The author may also have allowed the use of the video through a CC licence. Read the terms of use for the CC licence carefully.
CREDIT THE CREATORS Remember to credit all creators and provide information about the creators of the works you have used in your article.
PUBLICATION OF A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE Ensure that you have all the necessary permissions to include images and other works when your article is published.
People who have been interviewed often want to review the text before the article is published.
